Repeat Offenders: The Companies With the Most Recalls in America

The company with the most recalls in America over the past two years is Medline Industries, a medical supply maker and distributor, with 161 separate recalls in the ConsumerSun Recall Index between October 31, 2024 and October 27, 2026. Albertsons Companies ranks second with 132 recalls, and Ford Motor Company is third with 103. The rest of the top five are ASP Global with 64 recalls, Chetak New York with 52, and Chrysler (FCA US) with 51. Together, the 15 companies on this list account for 878 of the 4,726 recalls in the Index, nearly one in five.

The ranking holds a surprise worth understanding. The top of the list is not dominated by the carmakers most people associate with recalls. It is dominated by medical distributors, hospital kit packers, and a grocery chain, and the reason says a lot about how recall counting works.

Nine of the top 15 answer to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and six answer to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). No company regulated mainly by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) cracks the top 15, because that agency's 956 recalls in the window are spread across a much wider field of importers and manufacturers.

Why do distributors and grocery chains top the list?

The FDA counts recalls the way it publishes them, one product announcement at a time, and that structure rewards companies in the middle of the supply chain with long lists.

Medline Industries, ASP Global, and Avid Medical all assemble or distribute surgical convenience kits for hospitals. When a single component inside those kits is defective, every kit configuration containing that component can generate its own separate recall record. In October 2026, for example, Avid Medical filed recall after recall for surgical packs, from robotic prostatectomy packs to craniotomy packs, because the packs may have been contaminated with a lubricant used during manufacturing. One underlying problem became dozens of entries.

Albertsons Companies shows the same effect in the grocery aisle. The chain sells hundreds of store made deli and prepared food items under its own name, so when a labeling problem surfaces, each item gets its own announcement. On June 10, 2026, Albertsons filed a run of recalls for store made salads and salmon dishes whose labels did not declare ingredients such as salmon or walnut. Chetak New York, a food importer, reached 52 recalls the same way, including a December 17, 2025 series in which one Deep brand frozen vegetable after another tested positive for Salmonella. Silver Moon, an ice cream maker, logged 49 recalls, many of them single flavors pulled over undeclared colors, milk, or soy.

A high count, in other words, often means a company sells or distributes a very large number of individually labeled products. It does not automatically mean its products are the most dangerous on the list.

Which automaker has the most recalls?

Ford Motor Company leads the vehicle side with 103 recalls, more than double Chrysler (FCA US) at 51. Toyota and General Motors follow at 32 each, then Forest River, a recreational vehicle maker, at 29 and Hyundai Motor America at 28.

The vehicle ranking flips the logic of the FDA list. A carmaker files one recall per defect campaign, but a single campaign can cover an enormous number of vehicles. Ford's October 20, 2026 recall for a tailgate cable failure covered 30,123 trucks. Toyota's October 20, 2026 recall of 2022 to 2026 Sienna Hybrid minivans for an unsecured seat back covered 228,367 vehicles. Counted by recalls filed, Ford looks three times as exposed as Toyota. Counted by vehicles involved, the picture would look very different, which is why this study ranks by recalls and says so.

How serious are these recalls?

Recall counts say nothing on their own about severity, so it helps to look at what the agencies flagged across the full Index. Of the 2,819 FDA recalls in the window, 653 were Class I, the agency's most serious category, reserved for situations with a reasonable probability of serious harm.

Across all three agencies, the most common hazard themes were fire and burn risks with 512 recalls, Salmonella contamination with 289, undeclared allergens with 284, lead with 253, Listeria contamination with 138, and foreign objects in food with 124. Food was the largest product category overall at 1,451 recalls, followed by health products at 1,344 and vehicles at 951.

How we counted

This study is computed from the ConsumerSun Recall Index, which aggregates official recall records from the Food and Drug Administration (2,819 recalls), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (956), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (951), dated October 31, 2024 through October 27, 2026, for a total of 4,726 recalls.

Companies are ranked by the number of separate recalls published under their name, not by units or vehicles involved. Names are the names the agencies published, lightly normalized: legal suffixes such as Inc. and LLC were removed, and names filed with a "dba" are counted under the parent company. One caution follows from that method. A company that distributes products made by others can accumulate recalls for problems it did not manufacture, and this ranking counts announcements, not fault.

Frequently asked questions

Which company has the most recalls?

Medline Industries, with 161 separate recalls in the ConsumerSun Recall Index between October 31, 2024 and October 27, 2026, all of them Food and Drug Administration recalls. Albertsons Companies is second with 132, and Ford Motor Company third with 103.

Why do medical distributors have more recalls than carmakers?

Counting rules. A distributor files a separate recall for each labeled product or kit configuration, so a large catalog produces many small recalls. A vehicle maker files one campaign that can cover hundreds of thousands of vehicles at once, so its count is lower even when the number of affected products is far larger.

Which carmaker has the most recalls?

Ford Motor Company, with 103 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls in the two-year window, ahead of Chrysler (FCA US) with 51 and Toyota and General Motors with 32 each.

4,726 recalls dated October 31, 2024 to October 27, 2026: 2,819 from the Food and Drug Administration, 956 from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and 951 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
