Costco Recalls: Current List, Member Alerts and Refunds

Costco posts recalls by item number on its Recalls & Product Notices page — and because every purchase is tied to a membership, Costco also contacts buyers directly. Here is how to check what you bought, why Kirkland Signature recalls work differently, and how refunds actually happen.

Costco Recalls: Current List, Member Alerts and Refunds

Costco Recalls: Where to Check and How Returns Work

Short answer: Costco lists its recalls on its Recalls & Product Notices page, each identified by the Costco item number, with older notices on a past recall notices page. Costco is also the retailer most likely to come to you: because every warehouse purchase is recorded against a membership, Costco notifies buyers directly when something they bought is recalled. Recalled items are refunded — the notice sets the steps, and Costco's published satisfaction guarantee stands behind it.

Where Costco posts recalls

Costco's own page is the first stop because it is organized the way Costco sells: by item number and by where the product was sold. Notices carry scope lines — "All US," "Puerto Rico Only," "models sold since September 2024" — so you can tell at a glance whether a notice even covers your purchase:

The top of the page when we checked (October 22, 2026) shows the format working: a Kalorik Maxx air fryer identified by item number, sauna notices split by the years the models were sold, a Goal Zero YETI 3000X recall covering all US locations, and a cleaner recall limited to Puerto Rico. Costco's customer service says it releases recall information there "as soon as possible," and the page is where the member letters described below are posted.

The Kirkland Signature difference

Every retailer hub on this site has a house brand, but only Costco's is the reason people join. Kirkland Signature is Costco's own label, it is sold nowhere else, and when a Kirkland product is recalled the notice trail runs straight back to a Costco warehouse:

  • The name on the package is Costco's, even when the maker is not. When Acme Smoked Fish recalled Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in October 2024 after lab testing confirmed Listeria monocytogenes, the FDA notice named Acme — but the product (twin 12-ounce packs, UPC 0 96619 25697 6, lot 8512801270, sold at Florida warehouses) existed only at Costco, and the remedy was to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. It was later classified Class I, the most serious grade — the kind our FDA vs. USDA explainer says to act on the same day.
  • Kirkland notices span every agency. CPSC records include a recall of Kirkland Signature prosecco bottles; USDA and FDA notices cover Kirkland meats and packaged foods. If it says Kirkland Signature, no other store's list will have it — check Costco's page or our food recalls hub.

The practical point: for Kirkland items, skip the "which store sold it?" step that slows down other recalls. You already know.

How Costco tells members: the letter is real

The live question on the old version of this guide was whether Costco actually contacts members. It does, and the proof is on Costco's own site. A member notice linked from the Recalls & Product Notices page, dated September 3, 2026 and covering Mistolin and Lestoil cleaners sold in Puerto Rico, opens:

"Dear Costco Member, Costco records indicate that you, or one of your add-on members, have purchased one or more of the items listed below… You are receiving this email because the product you purchased may be included in a product safety recall."

The notice then does the matching for the member — the purchase window (April 1, 2025 to June 17, 2026), the UPC and the lot-code pattern — and gives both remedy paths: a refund through the manufacturer's recall site, or return the item to your local Costco for a full refund. That is the membership model working as a safety system: the records that track your purchases can find you when a product turns out to be dangerous.

Three limits to know. First, the notice goes to the contact details on the membership — an old email address means a letter you never see. Second, purchases by an add-on member land on the primary member's record. Third, direct notice is a backstop, not a system: the Recalls page is the complete list, so check it yourself whenever a recall hits a category you buy.

How to check products you bought at Costco

  1. Start with the item number. Costco notices are indexed by it, and it is printed on your receipt and usually on the packaging. An item-number match beats a product-name search.
  2. Then match the codes. Lot code, UPC and date range, exactly as printed — two lots of the same product can sit in different recalls, or only one in any recall. Keep the packaging until the match is settled.
  3. Use your account for online orders. Costco.com orders appear under Orders & Returns, with dates and item names. Warehouse purchases are on your membership record — that is how Costco found the buyers in the letter above.
  4. Cross-check food in two places. A Kirkland food notice appears on Costco's page and in the federal lists; our egg recalls guide shows how a big FDA food recall reads when Costco-sold cartons are part of it.

Does Costco refund recalled items? How returns work

Yes. Two layers apply, in this order.

The notice comes first. Each Costco recall notice carries its own instructions: return the item to a warehouse, contact the manufacturer, or use a dedicated recall site, as the September 2026 letter above offered. Some notices say to stop using the product and dispose of it rather than bring it back. Follow the notice, not the general policy, when the two differ.

The satisfaction guarantee stands behind it. Costco's published returns policy — its Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee — promises a refund of the purchase price on the merchandise it sells, with a short list of exceptions. The one that matters most for recalls: many electronics and major appliances carry a 90-day return window, after which problems route to warranty support instead of a refund. (A recalled appliance inside a CPSC notice follows the notice's remedy regardless.) Warehouse purchases go back to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse; online orders can be returned at a warehouse or started through Costco.com.

You usually do not need the receipt. Because the purchase sits on your membership record, the warehouse can verify what you bought — the same record Costco uses to notify you. Bring your membership card, the item, or photos of the item number and lot code if the notice told you to dispose of the product.

If a remedy stalls. Some remedies run through the manufacturer, not Costco. Our recall refund guide walks through each remedy type and what to do when a company won't honor it. Compare Walmart recalls — Sam's Club has its own recall FAQ and receipt rules — and see the full picture at recalls and how to check if a product is recalled.

Recall page, member-notice and refund facts checked October 22, 2026 against Costco's Recalls & Product Notices page, a Costco member recall letter dated September 3, 2026 hosted on Costco's site, Costco's published returns policy, and the FDA's October 2024 Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon notice. The agency or manufacturer notice for your product is always the final word.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco refund recalled items?

Yes. Follow the recall notice first — it sets the remedy, and some notices route you to the manufacturer or a dedicated recall site. Behind that, Costco's published satisfaction guarantee promises a refund of the purchase price on the merchandise it sells, and warehouse purchases can be returned at any Costco warehouse. Your membership record stands in for the receipt, because Costco can look the purchase up.

How does Costco notify members about a recall?

Two ways. Costco posts the notice on its Recalls & Product Notices page, and it contacts buyers directly using its purchase records. A member notice linked from that page opens: 'Costco records indicate that you, or one of your add-on members, have purchased one or more of the items listed below.' Notices go out by email or letter, so keep the contact details on your membership current.

How do I check whether something I bought at Costco was recalled?

Start with Costco's Recalls & Product Notices page, which lists each notice by the Costco item number printed on your receipt and packaging. Match the item number first, then the lot code, UPC and dates in the notice. Online orders also appear in your Costco.com account under Orders & Returns. Our Costco hub collects the CPSC, FDA and USDA notices that name Costco as a seller.

What if the recalled product is Kirkland Signature?

Kirkland Signature is Costco's own brand, sold only at Costco, so the trail is shorter: the federal notice names the maker or importer, but you bought it from Costco and Costco is where the refund happens. When Acme Smoked Fish recalled Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in October 2024 over Listeria, the FDA notice told buyers to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund — that place is a Costco warehouse.
