The latest dog food recalls from the FDA list, how to match your bag's lot code, and what to do if it's recalled.

Short answer: Dog food recalls in the U.S. are announced by the FDA, which keeps the official list on its Animal & Veterinary Recalls & Withdrawals page. To check your bag or can, match the brand, product name, lot code and best-by date on the package against the recall notice. If they match, stop feeding it, keep the package, and follow the refund steps in the notice.

Each recall covers specific lots, not every bag the brand makes. The Pedigree recall, for example, covered two lots of one canned flavor. That's why the lot code matters more than the brand name.

How to check if your dog food is recalled
- Find the codes on your package. Look for the lot number, the best-by or use-by date, and the UPC. On bags they're usually printed near the top seam or on the back. On cans they're stamped on the lid or bottom.
- Open the FDA notice for your brand. Start at the FDA recall list and click the company's announcement. The notice lists every affected lot, size and date.
- Match all of it. Same product name, same size, and a lot code and date inside the recalled range. A different flavor or size from the same brand usually isn't included unless the notice says so.
- Check where you bought it. If you bought it online, look in your account. Amazon posts recalls on your account, and Walmart links each notice from its recall page.

What to do if your dog's food is recalled
- Stop feeding it and put the package somewhere pets and kids can't reach it.
- Keep the package or take clear photos of the lot code, date and UPC. Most refunds ask for them.
- Follow the notice. It says whether to return the food to the store, throw it away, or contact the company for a refund. Our guide to getting a refund for a recalled product walks through each option.
- Clean up. With Salmonella or Listeria recalls, wash bowls, scoops and storage bins, and wash your hands after handling the food. These germs can affect people as well as pets.
- Call your vet if your dog seems unwell. Only a vet can say whether symptoms are related.
How to report a problem with pet food
If your dog got sick and you suspect the food, the FDA takes reports through its pet food complaint process. Keep the package and the lot code. Reports help the FDA spot problems that can lead to a recall.
Why dog food gets recalled
Looking only at the eight recent entries above, the reasons fall into three groups:
- Germs: Salmonella and Listeria (Fi, Northwest Naturals, Oma's Pride, Raaw Energy).
- Foreign material: metal or plastic pieces (Fromm, Pedigree).
- Nutrient problems: too much or too little of a vitamin or mineral (Breeder's Edge/Shelter's Choice, Steve's Real Food).
